Ashburton is rapidly becoming a thriving gastronomic market town with an exciting variety of speciality shops and eating places. Stroll around the town and meander in and out of the wonderful and abundantly stocked delicatessens, wine merchants, traditional bakers and butchers shops. A weekly farmers market is held on Fridays and Saturdays at Tucker's yard.

Ashburton's pubs and Inns have had a reputation for hundreds of years and many of them still exist today. Together with the town's thriving cafes and excellent restaurants there is something to suit everyone's taste and budget. You can have Tapas at the Moorish Cafe, dinner at the Agaric restaurant www.agaricrestaurant.co.uk or afternoon tea in one of the lovely tea rooms. Many of the pubs offer delicious meals and great hospitality too. A fantastic new wine bar 'No 14' has recently opened on North Street.

Apart from being on the culinary map, Ashburton has a reputation as a centre for antiques and collectables. Buyers travel from far afield attracted to the quality and number of outlets situated in the town. The monthly sale in the auction room and bookshops selling antiquarian and used books also attract much interest. There are also a number of galleries, art shops and gift shops selling art and crafts, furniture and jewellery. A well equipped outdoor adventure clothing store can be found on North Street.

Places of interest

Ashburton has its own Museum and many important, unusual and historical buildings. The Town Hall, St Lawrence Chapel and The Parish Church of St Andrew are significant amongst the town's architecture. Wander around Ashburton and you will be able to see a wealth of historical buildings and structures. Former gaming houses, fish-tailed slate facades and medieval granite arched doorways all within a 5 minute walk!
